Heck, this may be the epitome of the greatest pre-code movie paper designs ever produced in Hollywood! Offered here is an amazingly early 1933 set of Special Herald Lobby Card posters on FOOTLIGHT PARADE staring the legendary James Cagney.
I've been avidly collecting vintage 1920's and'30's paper for about 40 years now and have seen it all. This set is as nice as anything ever produced. It's also as rare as anything that has ever survived.
This is the one and onl y verifiable unused and complete set of 12 known to exist WORLDWIDE! It has a remarkably special history that explains the why and how these managed to survive UNUSED! This COMPLETE SET came from the prestigious collection of the famous Smith Brothers from Oklahoma. If you're an old time movie paper collector you'll know who they are.
They're noted as being one of the first collectors of vintage movie paper in the US, as well as being responsible for creating a plethora of other serious collectors in that area. Their enthusiasm for collecting was infectious. This, more than remarkable, Pre-Code set was one of them. The brothers specifically singled this set out for their personal collection and saved them with an original exhibitor's advertising card that Warner Brothers sent out to promote these to the movie theater managers.I mention it because it clarifies how many cards were originally produced, and so determines that this is indeed the whole set. I've posted a photo of the exhibitor's card for reference only (see photo #8). The cards are printed on similar stock to that of an 11x14 1930's lobby card.
They were printed by the Continental Litho Corp. The same outfit that printed the one-sheet and lobby cards. Each card measures slightly shy of 4x9 inches. These 12 originals are in unprecedented NearMINT UNUSED ORIGINAL CONDITION!Issued in late 1933, was one of the films cited as being directly responsible for a clampdown of a Hollywood run amuck, spawning a rigorous Hays Code enforcement that would last for decades to come. The Hays code was implemented several years before Footlight Parade was released, but Hollywood just laughed it off with a wink and a smile. With the wild success of King Kong (earlier in 1933), forwarding its gone-ape violence, not to mention the nudity and sexual situations involving Fay Wray, and, with the other giant stars such as James Cagney running around on screen spouting innuendos every five minutes, the bible belt was up in arms - they finally had enough - and the rest is wholesome history. It's no wonder, just take a look at the sex-appeal these cards are so brashly promoting. The girls are more than scantily clad and exceed even today's public standards for nudity in film advertising.
Warner Brothers designed these heralds to have irresistible. Images, NUDES no less, to be distributed widely throughout the public.ONLY one of the 12 heralds even shows Cagney or any of the other stars in the film. The rest are just hot and/or nude girls!
This is exactly what prompted the Hays Code to clampdown in June of 1934 (when this film was still running in theaters), and this is exactly why this RARE original set is more than important. These are undeniable as a quintessential example of standout Hollywood Art Deco high-design. They're also undeniably important, as they personify a chapter in American cinema and pop-culture history! It gets no better than this. It can crash regardless of any decision you make and can even crash regardless of any decision made by the company related to the stock - Leaving you with a near worthless piece of paper that won't inspire anyone!
